Easy hobbies to try this winter
Every season I find myself wanting to really step into it with a plan and an idea of what I want to achieve. I am not someone who likes to just sit around and watch TV without having something to do with my hands. This winter I really want to get into crafting and find things to do that don’t require a screen, so let’s chat about some easy hobbies to try this winter.
Why hobbies are important
When I became sick and had to stop working, I felt adrift in a world that prioritises what you do for a living. It is usually the first thing people ask when they meet you and is usually the focus of most of your formative years.
I had worked hard to become a nurse, and even when my body couldn’t cope with that, I tried several other jobs in the hope that I could keep working. At first, I found myself struggling to fill my days and I really hated just being at home, especially as I had to move back into my childhood home with my parents.
In time however, I found new hobbies that helped me to discover new interests and develop skills I had never considered before. Like learning basic coding and improving my writing through roleplaying online and working on mindfulness while colouring.
Hobbies can also be a wonderful way to find friends, I know I am very thankful to have found three of my best friends through blogging, YouTube and roleplaying. I love finding friends through social media and groups online that are connected to the hobbies and interests I have.
Being disabled and having chronic illnesses are wonderful ways of connecting and finding friends, and I love being an advocate and connecting with others. But what if you want to talk about something else and get lost in a new interest? Hobbies and trying new things can lead to new friends too as well as new skills.
As a new season rolls around, I always find myself wanting to set new goals and plans, and this winter I really want to lean into hibernating. I love the idea of curling up on the sofa with a hobby that gets me off the computer screen and absorbed in something new.
As a new season rolls around, I always find myself wanting to set new goals and plans, and this winter I really want to lean into hibernating. Share on XI have been thinking for a while about the sort of hobbies I would like to learn, one is still to keep working on learning to draw and to improve my crafting skills. I would love to start learning how to work with air dry clay to possibly make my own decorations and altar pieces to dedicate to my gods and ancestors.
Recently, I have been looking at embroidery kits online and thinking about learning this as it would go so well with my sewing. Speaking of, I would love to get back to sewing and even work on making my own decorations by sewing which could be so fun.
Pinterest is a site I use a lot to save information and inspiration about hobbies I am interested in. I love it because you can make boards that are kind of like a pinboard where you can save information or pictures to go back to later.
I often use them as altars and manifestation boards, they have so many uses, and it is a free site which to my mind makes it even better! I have been using the site for years and I love how easy it is to learn. Also, how diverse and useful it can be to use especially when looking for easy hobbies to try this winter.
Easy hobbies to try this winter
- Embroidery – I often see threads and accessories for embroidery in charity shops as well as beginner’s kits on sites like Amazon and Etsy. This is not going to be possible for everyone to do, but it is something that I really would love to try.
- Painting – I love colouring books for adults, and if you do as well you might be excited (like I was) to know there are similar books for painting available. The paper is better suited to paint and could be something fun to try out even if you cannot draw very well.
- Scrapbooking – I have a terrible memory, so I find scrapbooks are a wonderful way to look back and trigger memories. I am currently scrapbooking my autograph collection and pictures I have had taken with celebrities I like. But this hobby can be applied to many interests, and again I often find things second hand that can be used in this hobby.
- Knitting and crochet – I have tried these hobbies a few times and honestly, they are not too hard to pick up. There are a lot of small projects as well as kits available for beginners to try out these hobbies and see if they like them.
- Journaling – Once again, journaling can cover a few different types of projects, and this can even be used to track your symptoms if that was something you would like to get into. From bullet journalling to daily reflections, you are bound to find something here to interest you and be useful.
- Roleplaying – This hobby can be done in so many ways, from in person with friends, to creative writing online, I have loved this hobby for decades. It can be done online, or in person and it is very versatile with many even themed to fandoms like Walking Dead and Dr Who!
These are just a few ideas for easy hobbies to try this winter, the possibilities are endless and I am sure you have a few you got your eye on! Let me know in the comments what hobbies you are going to try, or the hobbies you do now you think I should try; maybe I will do it in a YouTube video!

I used to cross stitch but my hands cannot do it anymore. I use colouring books (I didn’t know there were painting ones), wasgij jigsaw puzzles and Lego (recently learnt a common interest with autistic people). I don’t buy Lego kits, I make my own creations with the Lego I have.
